Shipping is one business that uses a lot of non-renewable sources. DHL, one of the world’s largest shippers, has announced they’re switching from plastic bags to renewable ones.

These bags will make a big difference. Currently, plastic bags degrade in 1,000 years! The new bags that DHL will be using degrade in a scant two years. Once they degrade, they essentially revert to being water, carbon dioxide and biomass.

DHL currently operates in 220 countries worldwide and is looking to make policy changes to lessen their impact on the environment in many of these areas.

“We are constantly seeking new ways to support sustainable development, over and above existing international conservation standards and guidelines,” said Janet Jweihan, who works for DHL Express in the UAE. “One result of the UAE’s rapid growth is a per-capita waste generation of around 725 kg, double that of the UK.“

“As a responsible business, we want to positively impact on our communities and adhere to an incremental environmental strategy, of which the bio-bags initiative is one example, that is aimed at protecting the environment in which we live and work,” she added.

All in all, this looks like the start of great move by a major shipper. Hopefully, it will prompt the other major players to follow suit.
