The idea of eco friendly living is an interesting one. Most responsible people, if given proper choices, would likely choose to live in an environmentally friendly way. After all, there is only one planet earth, and all of us live here. We rely on the continued good fortune of the planet, so there’s no reason for us to go out of our ways to intentionally “poison the well” so to speak. But eco friendly living right now is more of a marketing tagline than it is a reality for most of us.

If you live in an urban area, you’re far removed from many choices for sustainable living. You rely on others for your food supply, your electricity needs, and for every other service or product offered. This also means when you purchase any “green product”, you’re relying on the integrity of the manufacturers to “get it right.”

This is of course also true of people who live more rural lifestyles, but depending on their use of land, they might manage to get somewhat “off the grid.”

However, going green is still something that all of can aspire to. Any action we take is better than none for our environment. If we get in the habit of conserving energy, recycling non-biodegradable items, and pollute less, we ensure a better future.

If you’re ready to start going green, you can do so in stages. There’s no hurry for you to undergo a rapid conversion. Instead, make lasting changes that will affect the planet and your life over time.

Some of the ideas you can start with:

  1. Investigate solar energy. It’s getting more affordable and may be an option for a future upgrade
  2. Use organic products in your garden
  3. Change your light bulbs to CFLs (Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs)
  4. Conserve water throughout your house
  5. Make an effort to recycle.

Even small changes, made over time, can have a huge effect on the environment. This is especially true when millions of other people are also making the changes. Get educated on what eco friendly living really is, and educate others, too. In the end, it will be worth it for all of us.
