Green living ideas that anyone can embrace
Green living takes practice, and planning. You can’t suddenly go from not paying attention to the environment, to becoming a full-blown treehugger over night. For most people, “going green” takes time. So what kind of adjustments can you make that will make your time on earth kindler and gentler? By starting small you’ll end up taking the steps needed to make our planet a cleaner place.
Tips and Ideas on Living Green
- Make your next car a fuel-efficient one. Pollution from automobiles is a huge contributor the problem of greenhouse gas. Why not get a car that consumes much less fuel and has a better carbon footprint than the one you’re currently driving? You’ll feel better about life, and you’ll save money on transportation costs.
- Drive less. Share a commute to work. Use your bike instead of your car for short trips. Become less reliant on the “steel horse” that has caused so much damage to the environment. You’ll get more exercise if you use a bike or walk, and the planet will thank you for conserving resources
- Go green with your “thumb.” Don’t forget about the joys of organic gardening. Gardening is a great way to grow food that is great to eat and safe for the planet. Gardening is also a fun past-time that has a lot of rewards for the effort.
- Conserve energy around the house. Don’t underestimate simple energy savings tricks like changing your lightbulbs and turning off electricity when not in use. Every little bit adds up, especially when billions of people adopt the practices
- Vote for the “Green Candidates.” Not all politicians are created equal, especially when it comes to environmental issues. Do the research and vote for the candidates who will cherish green principles. Voting is a sure-fire way to make changes in policy.
- Recycle. Sure it seems obvious, but many people still don’t recycle. If you recycle, you can help make a significant impact on pollution. Recycling items that are non-biodegradable is a must. Teach others to recycle, as well
- Become a green evangelist. Make sure you tell others about green living. Educate yourself and others about what dangers our planet faces, and make sure to come up with plenty of ways to help, rather than just becoming a prophet of doom.
We can expect big results just from making small changes. With 6.5 billion on the planet, the key to our survival is the majority of people making alterations to their current way of living. Every time millions of people update how they behave, the ripple effect on the environment is enormous.
Changes come from contact with other people. Educating yourself and others is a key, if you really care about what happens. Parents who take the time to educate their kids on environmental issues are probably doing society the greatest service of all. Children born in the 21st century are the ones who will need the advantages of a clean planet more than anyone else, so it makes sense to help them establish a good foundation of eco-friendly practices.
It’s hard not to be enthused about green technology these days. The high gas prices that lasted for several years undoubtedly “spooked” many consumers worldwide out of desiring gas guzzlers. Of course with oil prices down, you have to worry just a bit that people might have forgotten the lesson. Realistically, though, anyone who has paid close to $5 a gallon for gas is very likely to want to drive a much more fuel efficient vehicle now than ever before. High gas prices has been a great teacher, even for our politicians who finally seem to be beating the drum of “green living” in earnest.
