In this article, we take a look at issue that is important to fans of environmentally friendly polices, and we answer the question, “What are fair trade products?”

Fair trade products aren’t widely in use

Most of the products that everyone uses on a daily basis aren’t a fair trade product, even though the concept would appear to be common sense. A fair trade product is a product that is traded using the fair trading partnership. The main points of a fair trade product are that they are traded by making a payment of a fair price. A benefit of fair trading is poverty alleviation as well as sustainable development, especially in emerging markets. The main purpose for fair trading is to lebvel the playing field for the producers of agriculture, who are often economically disadvantaged.

Fair trading requires oversight

Fair trading also involves transparent management and the commercial relations to make sure that they will deal fairly and respectfully with the trading partner. In a sense, fair trade is the means of empowerment that could create independence for producers worldwide.

For a product to become a fair trade product, the following conditions must be met. The product must be made while paying the producers a fair price, providing the producer with a safe working environment, and practicing gender equality. This means that the fair trade product’s producer cannot be paid so low a wage that they cannot support themselves. The work of both men and women must be equally valued and then rewarded regardless of gender. Lasty, the working environment for the producers must be safe and healthy.

The definition of Fair Trade

In 2001, the definition of fair trade was developed by FINE. FINE includes the Fair-trade Labelling Organizations International, International Fair Trade Association, Network of European World-Shops and European Fair Trade Association. These four associations make up the FINE network.

Demand is increasing for Fair Trade Products

As more people buy Fair Trade Products, demand increases for Fair Trade Products, creating a circle of beneficial goodwill. Some consumers have even slowly stopped buying products that are not Fair Trade Products. These motivated consumers support the overall goal of creating Fair Trade Products, which is to create a better opportunity for the producers by giving them a fair trading relationship with their partners.

When you buy a fair trade certified product, you’re helping producers work in a safe working environment and giving them a fair pay for producing the product. Basically fair trade products help instill a greater sense of justice in world trading.

Look for the Fair Trade Certification on fair trade products

There are many different fair trade products. Some of these products have other sellers that are not fair trade certificated. To make sure that the consumers know which product is a fair trade product, a fair-trade certification program has been developed. If a product has this certification, it means that this product was made by fair trade producers. So if you’re interested in buying fair trade products to know you’re helping to create equality in the trading world, make sure to find the certification on the item. This certification will have the words “FAIR TRADE” written clearly, so it will be quite easy spot when searching for products.

Fair Trade is a counter to Free Trade, and is a movement towards sustainability and poverty alleviation.
